Evidence Performed by Mary Somerville
- NameOn the Connexion of the Physical Sciences Global Synthesis Project
- Description
Confronted by the dangerous fragmentation of nineteenth-century science into isolated, over-specialized fields, Mary engineered a massive, independent project to mathematically unify separate breakthroughs across physics, astronomy, chemistry, and geology. Her landmark text, On the Connexion of the Physical Sciences, served as a brilliant masterwork of global systems architecture. In it, she analyzed the orbital data of Uranus and explicitly published a strategic prediction that an undiscovered exterior planet was responsible, directly inspiring the mathematical discovery of Neptune by John Couch Adams. This project redefined the boundaries of modern science; it became a mandatory textbook at Cambridge University and directly compelled the philosopher William Whewell to coin the ungendered term scientist specifically to describe Mary's holistic, cross-disciplinary methodology.
