Evidence Performed by Mary Somerville

Commissioned by Lord Brougham on behalf of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge, Mary undertook the monumental task of translating Pierre-Simon Laplace's Traité de mécanique céleste from French algebra into accessible English. Recognizing that British thinkers lacked familiarity with continental mathematical analysis, Mary went far beyond a literal translation. She independently formulated extensive mathematical commentaries, generated numerous original geometric diagrams, and translated abstract algebraic systems into common scientific language. This was a Strategic Project that defined her global legacy, creating a definitive textbook that was subsequently adopted into the core curriculum at Cambridge University.
